About this place

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and San Canio, located in the heart of the medieval village of Acerenza, in the province of Potenza, is one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in Basilicata.

Built starting from the 11th century, it stands on the site of an ancient place of worship and is distinguished by its imposing stone façade, Romanesque forms and architectural elements influenced by the Normans.

The interior houses works of art, decorations and an evocative crypt dedicated to San Canio, the patron saint of the city. The cathedral is an important place of faith, history and culture, as well as one of the most representative symbols of Acerenza.
