About this place

The Cinto dell’Eremita is an archaeological and natural site in the territory of Gorgoglione, between 800 and 850 metres above sea level, in the heart of the Collina Materana (Materana Hills). It combines a natural cave, large sandstone rocks and dense Turkey oak woods.

What to see

• The cave of the Cinto dell’Eremita, a natural cavity that is easy to reach, a short distance from the road.
• The remains of an ancient settlement brought to light by excavations, a recent discovery that adds a piece to the ancient history of inland Basilicata.
• The sandstone rocks, the same «pietra di Gorgoglione» (Gorgoglione stone) used for centuries in the houses and doorways of the village.
• The Turkey oak wood surrounding the area.

How to visit

The area is located in via Mergoli and admission is free. It is a stop on the circular trekking and cycling routes linking Gorgoglione with Stigliano, Cirigliano and Aliano.

Useful information

• Hiking shoes are essential: the ground is uneven and the rock can be slippery.
• Nearby are the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta and, on another hill, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pergamo.
