About this place

The Norman tower is the symbol of San Mauro Forte: a large cylindrical tower that dominates the historic centre and is all that remains of the ancient castle. From the top, the view stretches over the calanchi (badland formations) and the hills of the Collina Materana.

History

The tower dates from the Norman period, between the 11th and 12th centuries, and may have been built on older remains, Lombard or Byzantine. It was part of a fortified castle, renovated in the Angevin period and dismantled in the 16th century. Over time the tower was incorporated into the noble palaces built around it. Next to it, on the ruins of the feudal palace, the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta was built from 1553.

What to see

• The crenellated tower over three levels, now restored.
• The octagonal hall, the heart of daily life inside, with the fireplace, the latrine, the well and the umbrella vault, open at the centre to let the smoke out and the light in.
• The internal stairs that climb up to the terrace.
• The belvedere, with views over the town and the calanchi.

How to visit

The tower is in Piazza Caduti, in the centre of the town. Visits are led by a local guide, free of charge, and last about 35-40 minutes. Opening hours are limited, so it’s best to check in advance. Even from outside, in the evening with the lights on, the tower is very atmospheric.

Useful information

• A few steps away are the Mother Church and the Palazzo Arcieri, home to the town’s museums.
• In January, for Sant’Antonio Abate, the streets around the tower fill with the sound of the Sagra del Campanaccio (a cowbell festival).
