About this place
The church of San Michele Arcangelo is one of the oldest churches in Potenza and one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Basilicata. It stands in a narrow lane a few steps from via Pretoria, and it appears almost by surprise.
History
Beneath the floor, a early Christian mosaic from the 5th century was discovered, a sign that a church already stood here in late antiquity. The present church, dedicated to San Michele as many churches with Lombard tradition are, is documented from 1178 and has been remodelled several times over the centuries.
What to see
• The exposed stone façade, with its double-arched portal and large window.
• The side portal, with a bas-relief of the Madonna and Child and Franciscan symbols.
• The bell tower and the Romanesque apse.
• The interior, simple and austere, with works such as the panels of a polyptych attributed to Simone da Firenze, a fresco of a Maestà (Virgin enthroned in majesty), and a Madonna and Child.
Useful information
• It is a church still open for worship: please visit quietly, outside of services.
• Not far away is the church of San Francesco, the city’s other great medieval church.
