About this place

The Ponte Musmeci, officially the ponte sul Basento (Basento Bridge), is the most important 20th-century architectural work in Potenza and one of the most original bridges in Italy. It is protected as a cultural heritage site.

History

It was designed by engineer Sergio Musmeci and built between 1971 and 1976, to connect the Potenza Centro exit of the ring road with the access roads to the southern part of the city.

What to see

• The structure: a single, extremely thin membrane of reinforced concrete that bends into four large, interlocking arches, resembling fingers, on which the road rests.
• The play of shapes and light seen from below, from the green area along the Basento, which was already planned in the original design.

How to get there

The bridge is in the lower part of the city, along the Basento, near the Potenza Centro station, and is also reachable by regional train.

Useful information

• The structure requires maintenance and the area underneath may be partially closed, so it is best to check in advance.
• Along the Basento there is also the ancient ponte romano di San Vito (Roman bridge of San Vito).
