About this place

The Bernalda Castle overlooks the historic centre of Bernalda from the top of Piazza San Bernardino, looking out over the Basento valley. Recently restored, it is open to visitors again.

History

A Norman fortification probably already stood on the site, and the shape of the towers suggests an Angevin phase. The present castle was built around 1470 on the orders of Bernardino de Bernaudo, secretary to the King of Naples, who also gave the town its name. The Aragonese fitted it with a moat and a drawbridge. In 1735 Charles III of Bourbon stayed here.

What to see

• The quadrangular plan with three cylindrical towers at the corners, wider at the base, typical of castles from the late 15th century.
• The square tower on the west side, considered older than the round towers.
• The restored interior rooms, which host exhibitions, including one dedicated to the art collection of film director Francis Ford Coppola, whose grandparents were from Bernalda.
• The view over the valley and the Metaponto plain.

Useful information

• Opening times vary through the year, so it is best to phone ahead.
• Next to the castle is the Mother Church of San Bernardino da Siena; about fifteen kilometres away towards the coast, you will find the Metaponto archaeological park and the Tavole Palatine.
