Lake Sirino
Lake Sirino is a small natural lake at the foot of Monte Sirino, at 788 metres above sea level, in the comune of Nemoli. With tree-lined banks and the hamlet’s houses reflected in the water, it is one of the most peaceful stops in the Appennino Lucano National Park, less than an hour from the sea at Maratea.

History
The lake fills a karst sinkhole and is possibly the last remnant of a large Pleistocene lake that once filled the Noce valley. It covers about 5 hectares, is up to 9 metres deep, and is fed by perennial springs, with no visible outflow. In the feudal era it belonged to Rivello; in 1834 Nemoli became an independent comune and the lake came under its jurisdiction.
What to see
- The lakeside loop, a road of about one kilometre around the shores, marked as a cycle path.
- The trees along the banks alders, elms, chestnuts, poplars and conifers, with marsh vegetation along the water.
- The view of the Sirino massif, the highest mountain in the park.
Useful information
- Reach it from the A2 motorway, taking the Lagonegro or Lauria exits; there is a motorhome area near the lake.
- The lake is suitable for walking, cycling and sport fishing with a licence.
- Higher up on Sirino is the glacial Lake Laudemio; heading down towards the sea, you reach the Christ the Redeemer of Maratea. Other lakes are covered in the guide The Lakes of Basilicata.
