About this place

The Church of Sant’Antonio is what remains of the Franciscan convent of Accettura, in the historic centre of the village.

History

The church was part of the convent complex of San Francesco, founded by Franciscan friars at the end of the 16th century (around 1585). Over time the convent was transformed and its cloister was absorbed into the neighbouring buildings. The church, which has been restored several times, is still open for worship.

What to See

• The high altarpiece, showing the Madonna and Child between San Francesco da Paola and Sant’Antonio.
• The Annunciation in the left arch, a 17th-century canvas attributed to Attilio De Laurentis da Montemurro.
• The reliquary of San Giuliano, made of painted wood, from the 17th–18th century, now kept in the parish house next to the church. San Giuliano is the patron saint in whose honour the Maggio [the traditional May festival] is celebrated.

How to Get There

The church is on Via Marone Mimi, in the centre of the village. It can be combined with a visit to the Mother Church of San Nicola and the Church of the Annunziata, just a few minutes’ walk away.

Useful Information

• This is a place of worship: please visit quietly and outside the times of services.
• To see the reliquary, it is best to ask at the parish.
