About this place

The Church of the Annunziata is located in the historic centre of Accettura, in the Scarrone district. It is recognisable by its façade, where a large panel of majolica tiles depicts the Annunciation.

History

The current church was rebuilt in Baroque style in the 17th century on the remains of an older building from the late 16th century. A bifora window (a two-light window), considered to date from the 14th century, survives from the earlier building. It has been restored and is open for worship.

What to see

• The Annunciation in majolica on the façade, painted on tiles in the 19th century.
• The Madonna and Child, a 16th-century wooden statue.
• The painting of the Annunciation from the same period, unusual because it reverses the traditional scene: the angel is on the right and the Madonna on the left.
• The bifora, a medieval window.

How to get there

It is in the heart of the historic centre, a short walk from the Mother Church of San Nicola and the Church of Sant’Antonio: the three churches can easily be visited on foot in an hour.

Useful information

• Opening hours vary: if it is closed, the façade with its majolica tiles is still worth a stop.
• Visit quietly, respecting religious services.
