About this place

The Mother Church of Saints Peter and Paul stands at the highest point of Pisticci, in the Terravecchia district, the oldest part of the town. From the forecourt you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views over the Dirupo district.

History

The current church stands on the site of a building from 1212, of which it keeps the bell tower and two stained-glass windows. In 1542 the side aisles were built by the brothers Pietro and Antonio Laviola. Over time it was enriched with altars and paintings, especially in the eighteenth century.

What to see

• The façade overlooking the square and the medieval bell tower.
• The interior in the form of a Latin cross with three naves, with small side chapels belonging to the town’s families, each with a statue by the sculptor Salvatore Sacquegna.
• The carved wooden altars and canvases of the Neapolitan school.
• The eighteenth-century paintings by Domenico Guarino, including the Madonna del Carmine, the Madonna del Pozzo and the Mysteries of the Rosary.
• The crypt and the sacristy, which can sometimes be visited on request.

Useful information

• It is a church still in use for worship: visit quietly and dress appropriately.
• From the forecourt you can go straight down into the Dirupo district.
