About this place

The Monte Coppolo rises behind Valsinni and is part of the Pollino National Park. On the summit you can still see the remains of a fortified city dating back to the 4th century BC.

The ancient city

The walls are built with large squared blocks of stone and enclosed a settlement with its acropolis (the fortified upper part of the city). Some scholars identify this city with Lagaria, a centre of Magna Graecia that legend says was founded by Epeius, the builder of the Trojan Horse. The identification, however, is not certain.

What to see

• The remains of the walls built in squared blocks.
• The views over the Sinni valley and the Pollino massif.
• The woods and the natural landscape of the mountainside.

Useful information

• The area is outdoors and is reached on foot along mountain trails: it is advisable to ask the Comune (town hall) or local guides about the route beforehand.
• Hiking boots and water are essential; it is best to avoid the hottest hours of summer.
• In the town centre you will find the castle of Isabella Morra and the historic village.
