About this place

The museum opened in 1987 in an old olive press beneath the house where Carlo Levi (1902–1975) lived in 1935–1936, during the eight and a half months of his confinement in Aliano. It displays objects used by peasants in farming, crafts and everyday life: tools for working the fields, crockery and pans, lamps, braziers and harnesses. Look out for the reconstruction of a typical peasant bedroom, where people and animals slept together, making the most of the little space available by building upwards.
