About this place

This small museum holds letters, documents and drawings about the confinement in Aliano, in 1935–1936, imposed by the Fascist regime on the doctor, writer and painter Carlo Levi (1902–1975). Of particular interest are the original lithographs for Christ Stopped at Eboli, donated by Levi himself. The book, published in 1945, tells of his experience in this small Lucanian village, where he lived among the local people and bore witness to the extreme poverty of peasant life in southern Italy.
