About this place

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is the main church of Tricarico and the seat of the diocese, one of the oldest in Basilicata: a bishop of Tricarico is documented as early as 968.

History

The church was built in the 11th century at the wish of the Norman Robert Guiscard, thanks to a donation from his nephew Robert, count of Montescaglioso. In 1383 Louis I of Anjou was crowned king of Naples here. It was remodelled several times in the following centuries.

What to see

• The frescoes and stuccoes that decorate the interior.
• The tombs of the bishops of the diocese.

Practical information

• It is a church open for worship: visit quietly, outside of services.
• Next to it, in the bishop’s palace, is the Diocesan Museum. A short distance away are the archaeological museum in the Palazzo Ducale and the Norman tower.
