About this place
The Torre Guevara is the only surviving part of the medieval castle of Potenza. About 20 metres high, it stands on the eastern edge of the historic centre, in a small park overlooking the Basento valley.
History
The castle was built in the Lombard period, around the 10th century, in a strategic position overlooking a bend of the Basento river. The tower was perhaps the first lookout post, around which the fortifications grew. In the 15th century the castle passed to the Guevara counts, from whom the tower takes its name. It lost its military role in the mid-17th century, when it was donated to the Capuchin friars and turned into a hospital. Of the castle, which was later demolished, only the tower remains.
