About this place
The ruins of Uggiano Castle stand on a hill west of Ferrandina. They are what remains of the ancient town from which Ferrandina originated.
History
The castle is documented from the 11th century: in 1029 it was besieged by the Saracens, and in the 14th century it was expanded. Around it stood the village of Uggiano, which was severely struck by an earthquake in the 15th century. At the end of that century, Federico d’Aragona moved the inhabitants to the nearby hill, founding Ferrandina. Uggiano was abandoned and the castle slowly fell into ruin.
What to see
• The walls of the great castle, beautiful at sunset, when the light turns them a warm colour.

How to get there
