About this place
The Cathedral of the Santissima Annunziata is the main church of Tursi and the seat of the Diocese of Tursi-Lagonegro. It overlooks the town’s main square, next to the Town Hall.
History
The church was built in the 15th century, starting from a sacristy of the previous century. In 1546 it became the cathedral in place of the church of San Michele Arcangelo. At the end of the 20th century it was severely damaged by a fire and largely rebuilt: the original building retains its Latin cross plan and columns with round arches.
What to see
• The high altar, dedicated to the Madonna di Anglona.
• The bronze door with scenes from the Gospel.
• The new organ, which replaced the 18th-century one.
Festivals
In spring the statue of the Madonna is carried here in procession from the Anglona sanctuary and stays for a few days. The patron saint, San Filippo Neri, is celebrated on 26 May.
Useful information
• It is a church open for worship: visit quietly, outside of services.
• From the centre, climb up to the Rabatana; a few steps away is the Albino Pierro house museum.
