About this place

The church of San Rocco, also known locally as «della Riforma» (“of the Reform”), stands in piazza Amendola, in the upper part of the historic centre of Sant’Arcangelo. It was the church of the convent of the Padri Riformati (Reformed Friars), the Franciscan friars of the Reform, and is considered the most distinctive church in the town.

What to see

• The high altar painting, considered one of the finest works of the late seventeenth century in Basilicata.
• The fresco of the Madonna and Saints, from the eighteenth century.
• The wooden altars and paintings from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
• The organ, choir and pulpit in carved and painted wood, and an eighteenth-century crucifix.

How to get there

The church is at the top of the historic centre: you climb on foot through staircases and alleyways, passing the town’s grand palazzi.

Useful information

• The church has been recently restored and is open for worship: you can visit quietly, outside of services.
• In the centre you will also find the Mother Church of San Nicola and the Torretta Sansanelli; outside the town, the convent of Santa Maria d’Orsoleo.
