About this place

The history of the Torretta

The Torretta Sansanelli, also known as Palazzo Sansanelli, is a historic building on via Giovanni Sansanelli, in the heart of Sant’Arcangelo.

According to the Basilicata Region’s cultural heritage record, it was probably built in the 19th century for the Sansanelli family, one of the town’s leading families. So it is not necessarily a medieval tower, but a noble residence distinguished by its small tower.

The building is also linked to the history of the Sansanelli family and to Nicola Sansanelli (1891-1968), a lawyer, writer and politician born in Sant’Arcangelo.

The Torretta is a fine example of local noble architecture and of the town’s social past, when the most influential families helped shape the face of the old town.
