About this place
The Norman Staircase (Gradinata normanna) is a flight of 54 steps carved into the rock of one of the pinnacles overlooking Castelmezzano. It led to the highest lookout post of the ancient castle, from which sentries watched over the Basento valley.
History
According to tradition, in the 10th century the inhabitants took refuge among the rocks to escape Saracen raids. Between the 11th and 13th centuries the Normans built a castle here, called Castrum Medianum, “the middle castle”, because it stood between the fortresses of Pietrapertosa and Brindisi Montagna: the name of the town comes from it. Today the castle’s remains consist of the ruins of its walls and the staircase carved into the stone, one of the iconic images of the Dolomiti Lucane.
What to see
• The staircase in the rock, with time-worn steps climbing almost vertically along the pinnacle.
• The remains of the walls of the Norman-Swabian castle.
• The view from the top: the village, the pinnacles, the Basento valley and, opposite, Pietrapertosa.
How to visit
In summer the staircase can be climbed safely, wearing a via ferrata harness kit and accompanied by an experienced operator. The climb is run by the same organisation as the Volo dell’Angelo (Flight of the Angel), and bookings are made online. Access is allowed from age 10, accompanied by a parent. Even without climbing, the staircase can be seen well from the village.
How to get there
• On foot: from the centre of Castelmezzano, follow via Domenico Volini up through the upper part of the village, following the signs for the staircase.
• By car: park at the entrance to the village; in the historic centre you get around on foot.
Useful information
• Closed-toe shoes with good soles are needed.
• Outside the season the climb may be closed, so it’s best to check in advance.
