Chiaromonte

On a spur between the Sinni and Serrapotamo valleys

Discover Chiaromonte

Chiaromonte stands at almost 800 metres on a rocky spur overlooking the Sinni and Serrapotamo valleys, in the Pollino National Park. Inhabited since the Iron Age, the area has yielded important Oenotrian and Greek-influenced necropolises.

The mother church of San Giovanni Battista holds the wooden statue of the Madonna del Sagittario. Chiaromonte is also known in academic circles as «Montegrano», the town described by political scientist Edward C. Banfield in his study of «amoral familism». It is part of the Mischiglio Way.
