Abriola

A mountain village and the Monteforte sanctuary

Discover Abriola

Abriola stands at almost a thousand metres in the central-western part of the province of Potenza, among the Lucanian Apennines, close to the Sellata and the Pierfaone ski slopes. The first reliable records date from the 9th century, at the time of the Saracen raids.

Sights include the mother church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the sanctuary of the Madonna di Monteforte, the destination of processions in June and August, and the ruins of Castel Glorioso at Arioso. Abriola was also the home of the 16th-century painter Giovanni Todisco, whose frescoes can be found in many Lucanian churches.
