Albano di Lucania stands at about 900 metres on Monte San Leonardo, in the central-western part of the province of Potenza, not far from the Lucanian Dolomites. The village enjoys wide views over the Basento and Bradano valleys.

The church of Santa Maria Assunta, built in Romanesque style between the 13th and 14th centuries on an earlier place of worship, is its main monument. The patron saint is San Vito, celebrated on 15 June.
