Anzi

The planetarium, the nativity scene and the bonfires of Saint Anthony

Discover Anzi

Anzi stands at over a thousand metres, one of the highest villages in Basilicata, in the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Park. Inhabited since the Iron Age, in Greek times it was known for its pottery.

On the top of Monte Siri, where the ruins of a castle from 1091 remain, a planetarium and astronomical observatory has been open since 2008. Every year the village sets up a large multi-scene nativity, one of the biggest in Europe. In June the bonfires of Saint Anthony light up the neighbourhoods with broom collected by local young people.
