Atella

Atella stands at about 500 metres in the Vitalba valley, the area stretching from Lagopesole to Mount Vulture in northern Basilicata. Founded in the 14th century, it keeps a compact old town around its mother church. Part of the Monticchio lakes area lies within its territory.

The mother church of Santa Maria ad Nives has a 14th-century façade with a pointed-arch portal and rose window, while the interior is 18th-century. In March, for Saint Joseph, bonfires are lit in the neighbourhoods; on Holy Thursday the village stages the Passion play.
