Avigliano

Avigliano stands at about 800 metres in the north-west of the province of Potenza, surrounded by mountains such as Monte Caruso and Monte Carmine, and is one of the largest towns in the province. In its hamlet of Lagopesole stands the great castle built by Frederick II, one of the most important Swabian castles in the South.

In town you can visit the pontifical basilica of Santa Maria del Carmine and the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli. On Monte Carmine stands the sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine, a pilgrimage destination; local traditions include the «quadri plastici», religious scenes staged by living figures.
