Balvano stands at about 425 metres in the north-west of the province of Potenza, on the border with Campania. A county in Norman times, it keeps the ruins of the castle of the Counts of Girasole and an old town rich in noble houses, such as Palazzo Laspro and Palazzo Tirico, now the town hall.

The village is part of the «Path of Fairy Tales and Stars» together with Rapone, Castelgrande and Bella. In August its cavatelli festival, celebrating the hand-made pasta, draws visitors from all around.
