Barile

An Arbëreshë village of the Vulture and its wine cellars

Discover Barile

Barile stands at about 660 metres on two tuff hills separated by a ravine, in the Vulture-Melfi area. It is one of Basilicata’s Albanian communities, where the Arbëreshë language and traditions live on. The Sheshë, the district of wine cellars dug into the tuff, tells the long story of Aglianico del Vulture wine.

In the old town, among arches, portals and stone-paved lanes, you can visit the church of the Madonna di Costantinopoli, with a 14th-century Byzantine-style fresco. On Good Friday the village stages a moving living Way of the Cross; in March, bonfires are lit for Saint Joseph.
