Bella

An ancient Lucanian town between two streams

Discover Bella

Bella stands at about 660 metres in the north-west of the province of Potenza, on a hill between two streams. Tradition holds that it was built on the ruins of ancient Numistro, the Lucanian town where Hannibal and Marcellus clashed in 210 BC.

On Piazza dei Martiri stands the mother church, the oldest in town, rebuilt after the 1694 earthquake. Bella is part of the «Path of Fairy Tales and Stars»; in its hamlet of San Cataldo, Luigi Di Gianni shot the 1959 documentary «Birth and Death in the South».
