Bernalda

Between the Basento valley and the sea at Metaponto

Discover Bernalda

Bernalda stands on a plateau just over a hundred metres high, at the end of the Basento valley, a few kilometres from the Ionian coast. Its territory includes Metaponto, with its archaeological park, the Tavole Palatine temple of Hera and long sandy beaches.

The old town gathers around the castle and the mother church of San Bernardino da Siena, founded in 1530 by Bernardino de Bernaudo, after whom the town is named. Among olive groves, citrus orchards and vineyards, Bernalda is a handy base for mixing sea, archaeology and the inland villages of the Matera area.
