Calvello

A medieval village among the Lucanian Apennines

Discover Calvello

Calvello stands at about 730 metres in the central part of the province of Potenza, among the Lucanian Apennines. Recorded since 1089, it grew around the Norman castle, later the ducal palace of the Carafa and Ruffo di Calabria families.

In the 19th century it was the scene of the Carbonari uprisings of 1820–21, an important chapter in the village’s history. Today Calvello is a quiet mountain destination, with old churches, woods and trails towards the Appennino Lucano National Park.
