Castelluccio Inferiore stands at about 500 metres in the Mercure-Lao valley, in the Pollino National Park, on the border with Calabria. Until 1813 it formed a single municipality with Castelluccio Superiore.

The old town has a medieval layout and is divided into «vicinati», historic neighbourhoods. At Campanella there is an archaeological area believed to be the site of ancient Nerulum. At Easter locals bake «u picciddèt», a sweet bread recognised as a traditional food product.
