A Byzantine castle in the Pollino

Episcopia stands at about 530 metres in the south of the province of Potenza, in the Sinni valley, inside the Pollino National Park. It began as a Byzantine fortress defending the Eastern Empire’s border against the Lombards.

Its landmark is the castle on a rocky spur, which keeps two contrasting towers, one square and one round, added by the Normans. The village offers fine views over the valley.
