Ferrandina
The home of the Majatica olive in the Basento valley
Discover Ferrandina
Ferrandina stands on a hill at about 480 metres, on the western bank of the Basento river. Refounded at the end of the 15th century by Frederick of Aragon, who named it after his father Ferrante, it keeps a well-ordered old town around the mother church of Santa Maria della Croce, with three 16th-century portals and Byzantine-style domes.
It is the capital of the Majatica olive, a local variety used both for oil and for the famous oven-baked olives. Nearby you can visit the ruins of Uggiano castle, on a spur overlooking the valley.
