Grassano

Between the Bradano and Basento, in Carlo Levi's footsteps

Discover Grassano

Grassano stands at about 560 metres between the Bradano and Basento valleys, in the north of the province of Matera. Recorded since the 12th century, it grew around a castle of the Knights of Malta: the mother church, at the top of the village, was originally its chapel and still holds a working 18th-century organ.

Grassano is also linked to Carlo Levi, who spent the first months of his exile here before being moved to Aliano. The village enjoys wide views over the hills and badlands of the Basento valley.
