Grottole

An ancient village between the Basento and Bradano rivers

Discover Grottole

Grottole is one of the oldest settlements in the region, between the Basento and Bradano rivers; its name is thought to recall the small caves dug into the tuff. Part of its territory lies in the San Giuliano Regional Reserve, whose lake attracts many bird species.

The village is dominated by the ruins of its castle. Don’t miss the mother church of Santa Maria Maggiore, with the former Dominican convent, and the church of San Rocco, home to Pietro Antonio Ferro’s large 17th-century polyptych of the Seven Works of Mercy.
