Grumento Nova

The Sanseverino castle and ancient Grumentum

Discover Grumento Nova

Grumento Nova, called Saponara until 1932, stands at about 780 metres in the Agri valley. It was founded in the 10th century by people from ancient Grumentum fleeing Saracen raids.

In the valley below you can visit the Grumentum Archaeological Park, with its Roman theatre, forum and baths, and the National Archaeological Museum of the Upper Agri Valley. The village is dominated by the Sanseverino castle, built in the 11th century by the Counts of Montescaglioso. The Pertusillo lake is nearby.
