Irsina

Ancient Montepeloso above the Bradano valley

Discover Irsina

Irsina, called Montepeloso until 1895, overlooks the Bradano valley from about 550 metres and is one of Italy’s largest municipalities by area. It is among the oldest towns in Basilicata and keeps a compact old town full of churches.

The 13th-century cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta holds the marble statue of Saint Euphemia that some critics attribute to Andrea Mantegna. The former convent of San Francesco houses the Janora Civic Museum, with archaeological finds from the area.
