Lavello lies in the middle Ofanto valley, at the northern tip of Basilicata between Apulia and Campania, on a steep-sided rise. Its origins are very ancient, as shown by the remains of an Iron Age village and a Daunian-Roman settlement.

In the centre you can visit the church of Sant’Anna, with an Annunciation by the Neapolitan painters Antonio and Costantino Stabile. Lavello’s carnival, with its floats and masks, is recognised as part of Basilicata’s intangible cultural heritage.
