Maschito

An Arbëreshë community and the Skanderbeg fountain

Discover Maschito

Maschito lies in the Vulture-Melfi area among hills and farmland and is one of Basilicata’s Albanian communities. A Roman stronghold, it was abandoned after an earthquake and refounded around 1467 by Albanian soldiers who had followed George Castriot Skanderbeg.

The late 16th-century old town keeps three churches, noble houses and the Skanderbeg fountain. For centuries the Byzantine rite was celebrated here in Greek, and the Arbëreshë language and traditions still survive today.
