Melfi

Frederick II's town at the foot of Mount Vulture

Discover Melfi

Melfi is the main town of the Vulture area and was one of the capitals of medieval southern Italy. Its Norman castle, enlarged by the Swabians, was a residence of Frederick II: here in 1231 the emperor issued the Constitutions of Melfi, the law code of the Kingdom of Sicily.

Today the castle houses the National Archaeological Museum of the Melfi area, with grave goods of the peoples who lived here and the famous Rapolla sarcophagus. The walled old town keeps the cathedral with its Norman bell tower and several noble palaces.

Around it, the Aglianico del Vulture vineyards, the Monticchio lakes and the woods of the extinct volcano round off a visit.
