Moliterno

The home of canestrato cheese and the beech wood

Discover Moliterno

Moliterno stands at about 880 metres in the upper Agri valley. Tradition says it was founded by people from Grumentum after the Saracen raids. The town is famous for Canestrato di Moliterno PGI, a cheese aged in the «fondaci», the town’s ageing cellars.

The old town is dominated by the Norman castle; the mother church of Santa Maria Assunta holds a 16th-century panel of Saint Peter and a 17th-century Last Supper by Giovan Francesco Ferro. A few kilometres away, the beech wood nature reserve is perfect for a walk.
