Montalbano Jonico

The town of the badlands between the Agri and Cavone rivers

Discover Montalbano Jonico

Montalbano Jonico stands at about 300 metres between the Agri and Cavone rivers, a few kilometres from the sea. It is surrounded by spectacular badlands, protected by the Montalbano Jonico Badlands Regional Reserve, where fossil-rich clay layers come to the surface.

In the old town, the Terravecchia that grew around the castle, you’ll find the mother church of Santa Maria dell’Episcopio, the remains of the Norman walls and palaces housing libraries and art spaces. The Good Friday procession, with its traditional Passion songs, is deeply felt.
