Montemurro lies in the Agri valley, overlooking the Pietra del Pertusillo lake. It was founded around the year 1000 by people from Grumentum fleeing the Saracen raids.

The village is the birthplace of poet and engineer Leonardo Sinisgalli, to whom a foundation is dedicated. Sights include the mother church, once part of the Franciscan convent of Sant’Antonio (1635), and the sanctuary of the Madonna di Servigliano on the Santo Jaso plateau.
