Muro Lucano

The stepped village above the gorge

Discover Muro Lucano

Muro Lucano spreads in steps down a steep slope overlooking a gorge, between 600 and 660 metres, in the north-west of the province of Potenza. The village is dominated by its castle, where tradition says Queen Joanna I of Anjou was killed in 1382, and by its cathedral.

In the valley below lies the artificial lake of Muro Lucano, with its 1914 dam, and the surroundings keep megalithic walls and Roman remains. The diocesan archive, recovered after the 1980 earthquake, is one of the most important in Basilicata.
