Oppido Lucano

Todisco frescoes and the rock church of Sant'Antuono

Discover Oppido Lucano

Oppido Lucano stands on the hills of the northern province of Potenza and has been inhabited since ancient times. It was the birthplace of John of Oppido, known as Obadiah the Proselyte, a Norman monk who converted to Judaism and wrote one of the oldest known pieces of Jewish music.

The convent of Sant’Antonio, founded in 1482, holds a cycle of wall paintings by Giovanni Todisco from 1558 and works by Antonio Stabile. Just outside the village is the rock church of Sant’Antuono, one of the best preserved in Basilicata, with a fresco cycle.
