Paterno is a young municipality in the Agri valley, crossed by the Agri river and the streams of the upper valley. Traces of Bronze Age transhumant shepherds have been found on the Civita hill.

The village gathers around its neighbourhoods and churches, such as the sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmelo and the new mother church of San Giovanni Evangelista. Its calendar of feasts is busy: in May the feast of San Giovanni with procession and fair, in July the fair of the Madonna del Carmine.
