Pescopagano
The westernmost village in Basilicata
Discover Pescopagano
Pescopagano is the westernmost village in Basilicata, in almost entirely mountainous country on the border with Campania. Its origins are ancient, linked to the «laure», rock hermitages near streams. In 2005 it was awarded the gold medal for civil merit.
About 5 kilometres away, on the summit of Montemauro at over a thousand metres, stands the sanctuary of the Madonna di Montemauro, the destination of a pilgrimage on the last Sunday of May. In early July the feast of the patron saint, Saint Francis of Paola, is celebrated with the traditional «flight of the angel».
