Pignola, a few kilometres from Potenza, is known as «the village of portals» for the many carved stone doorways of its old town palaces. Its highest part, the «Terra Vecchia», holds the mother church of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose bell tower was completed in 1390.

Its territory includes the Lago Pantano di Pignola, a nature reserve where many bird species stop over. In January, for Saint Anthony the Abbot, the village renews an age-old ritual with a large bonfire.
