Pomarico

Palazzo Donnaperna and the feast of San Michele

Discover Pomarico

Pomarico stands on a rise at about 460 metres between the Bradano and Basento rivers, in the central-eastern part of the province of Matera. Little remains of the castle that once crowned the hill, but its name lives on in the upper part of the village.

In the centre you can visit Palazzo Donnaperna, also called the Marchesale, built between the 17th and 18th centuries around a courtyard, with its Pink Hall and painted vaults, and the mother church of San Michele Arcangelo. From 7 to 9 May the patron saint’s feast renews old traditions such as the offering of wax and the procession of the triumphal cart.
